Otters prefer temperate, tropical, terrestrial, saltwater marine habitats. They are found in littoral areas as well as in estuaries. A littoral area a shore, or the zone in between high and low tides. An estuarie is water that extends inland in order to meet the mouth of a river. Otters are found along the Pacific coast from Peru to the southern tip of South American. Otter is the only species of the genus Lontra that is mainly a marine creature. Although otters spend most of their time in the water chilling with rock fish, crustaceans, and molluscs they also enjoy sunbathing on exclusive rocky shore areas. Otters come to shore mostly during mating season (which is during December and January). They prefer rocky land to smooth land because the bumps hills and crevices offer easy protection from predators and easy hiding to catch prey.
